EU LCS 2017 Season Overview
The 2017 Season of the European League of Legends Championship Series (EU LCS) was a transformative year for the region. It introduced a new Group-based format and marked the definitive rise of
G2 Esports as a world-class contender, following their historic run to the MSI 2017 Finals.
Detailed Tournament Format
Regular Season Structure:
- The 10 teams were divided into Group A and Group B based on a draft by the previous year's top seeds.
- Matches were Best-of-three (Bo3). Teams played a double round-robin within their own group and a single round-robin against the opposing group.
- The Promotion Tournament still existed, where the bottom teams from each group faced the top Challenger Series teams to defend their LCS spots.
The Road to Worlds:
- Qualification was determined by Spring and Summer performance. Spring champions earned a trip to MSI in Brazil.
- Worlds spots were given to the Summer Champion, the team with the most Championship Points, and the winner of the Regional Gauntlet.
