EU LCS 2014 Season Overview

The 2014 Season was the second year of the European League of Legends Championship Series (EU LCS). This year is best remembered for the formation of the "Superteam" Alliance, led by Froggen, and their historic victory in Summer which ended Fnatic's streak of consecutive titles.

Detailed Tournament Format

Regular Season Structure:

  • Two splits: Spring and Summer. Each split featured a Quadruple Round Robin (teams play each other 4 times).
  • All matches were Best-of-One (Bo1). Total of 28 matches per team per split.
  • The Top 6 teams qualified for the Playoffs, while the bottom teams faced the Promotion Tournament.

Worlds Qualification:

  • Unlike later years, there were no Championship Points. The top 3 finishers of the Summer Playoffs qualified directly for the World Championship in South Korea.

Historical Context

The 2014 World Championship was a bittersweet moment for Europe. Despite the high expectations for Alliance and Fnatic, both teams were eliminated in the group stage. Alliance's tournament was highlighted by a perfect game against Najin White Shield, but was marred by a shock loss to the Brazilian wildcards KaBuM! e-Sports, which led to their elimination.
