Overview

The 2022 League of Legends World Championship marked the conclusion of the competitive season, hosted across North America. This year featured a 24-team format with a traditional Group Stage, notable for the cancellation of the CIS slot (transferred to Europe) and the Cinderella run of the eventual champions.

Tournament Structure

The event is divided into three stages: Play-In, Group Stage, and Knockout Stage.

Regional Slots

  • China (LPL) & Korea (LCK): 4 teams each
  • Europe (LEC): 4 teams (Extra seed due to CIS absence)
  • North America (LCS): 3 teams
  • PCS & VCS: 2 teams each
  • Other Regions (LJL, CBLOL, LLA, LCO, TCL): 1 team each

Stage 1: Play-In (Sept 29 – Oct 4)

12 teams split into two groups.

  • Round 1: Single Round Robin. Group winners advance directly to Main Event.
  • Round 2: 3rd/4th place play a Bo5; winner plays the 2nd place team of the opposite group for the final slots.
  • 4 teams advance to the Group Stage.

Stage 2: Group Stage (Oct 7–16)

16 teams (12 Direct + 4 Play-In) divided into 4 groups (A, B, C, D).

  • Double Round Robin (Each team plays others twice).
  • Matches are Best-of-one.
  • Top 2 teams from each group advance to Knockouts.
  • Tiebreakers played for seeding/advancement if records are identical.

Stage 3: Knockout Stage (Oct 20 – Nov 5)

Eight teams enter a single-elimination playoff bracket.

  • All matches are Best-of-five.
  • Quarterfinals pair Group Winners vs Group Runners-up.
  • Side Selection: Based on seeding for Game 1, then Loser Selects.

Patch Info: Played on Patch 12.18. (Udyr disabled; Orianna disabled for final Group Stage day).
