Overview

The Season 1 World Championship was the inaugural global tournament for League of Legends, held at DreamHack Summer in Sweden. With a total prize pool of just under $100,000, it laid the foundation for the massive esports ecosystem that followed.

Tournament Structure

The tournament featured 8 teams from North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Regional Slots

  • Europe & North America: 3 teams each.
  • Southeast Asia: 2 teams (Philippines & Singapore).
  • Note: Korea and China did not yet have official servers or representatives.

Stage 1: Group Stage (June 18)

8 teams divided into 2 groups of 4.

  • Single Round Robin. Matches were Best-of-one.
  • 1st Place: Advanced directly to Upper Bracket Semifinals.
  • 2nd & 3rd Place: Advanced to Upper Bracket Quarterfinals.
  • 4th Place: Eliminated.

Stage 2: Playoffs (June 19–20)

Double Elimination Bracket.

  • Matches were Best-of-three, except the Best-of-one 5th-place match.
  • The Grand Final featured a 1-game advantage for the Upper Bracket winner.
  • Fnatic defeated against All authority (aAa) to become the first World Champions.

Historical Note: The meta was famously defined by the clash between the European "ADC + Support bot lane" style and the North American "Roaming Alistar / Bruiser bot" style. Europe's style prevailed.
